Ardsley Woman Finds Magic in Solstice

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Love and magic is in the air thanks to the Summer Solstice, said Susanne Whittle who runs Traprock Suite, located on the Eastchester-Scarsdale border.

A practicing Wiccan, Whittle, who lives in Ardsley, said that Summer Solstice is one of four magical days on the calendar "Magic exists particularly in certain places and times, during certain phases of the moon and on certain dates," she said.

The day of the year that has the longest daylight hours and the shortest night time hours, the solstice is a day that Whittle said can turbo charge the potential to achieve your heart's desire whether it is a new job, losing that 20 pounds or capturing the attention of that special someone.

Fellow Wiccan Angela Pizzarello, of Greenwich, said that the Summer Solstice is a day when love is in the air, more so than Valentine's Day.

"Everything in nature -- trees, plants and flowers -- are in full bloom," Pizzarello said. "The heavens are aligned and everything about the solstice is about lovers coming together."

But Whittle said the best way to use the energy of the solstice to propel wishes of achieving happiness, peace, love and abundance is with a strong message. "There is not a whole lot of power in hoping or trying, instead you have to use the power of your will," Whittle explains. "You have to say, 'It is my intention to bring good things to my life.'"

According to Whittle, Summer Solstice is also a good day to do some spiritual housekeeping. "It's a good day to bless your home and family and try to get rid of the stuff, physical or emotional that is in the way of moving forward with those intentions."

Whittle has spent 45 years studying Reiki, Wicca, and a myriad of other spiritual paths.

Traprock Suite, which has been a fixture in the community for 30 plus years, is chock full of healing oils, incense, candles charged with different healing energies, dream pillows, crystals (accompanied with its definitions and uses), angelic statues, statuary carvings, dream catchers, tarot cards, and jewelry.

The store also features guest tarot card readers, such as Pizerello, and holds classes as well.

"Many people come to us when their lives are falling apart, with divorce, cancer, a sick child, and we give them tools and advice to help them get through the tough times," Whittle said.

Whittle added that if you need a little physical reminder of using the Summer Solstice to propel your life forward, plant some sunflower seeds today. "With each seed, state your intention, such as health, love, and as your garden grows, it will remind you of your own growth," she said. "We all need a little more magic in our lives."
