Ashford Ave. Bridge Repairs Finished Early

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – Repairs to the Ashford Avenue Bridge scheduled to take place this week were finished ahead of schedule Monday night, allowing crews to move to the next phase of repairs. Planned closings of the southbound lanes of the Saw Mill River Parkway will no longer be necessary, Westchester County officials said in a press release.

“The County's contractor, McNamee Construction, made amazing progress last night, and all the work under the Ashford Avenue Bridge and over the southbound Saw Mill Parkway has been completed far ahead of schedule,” George Calvi, Ardsley village manager, said in an email Tuesday. “Thus, there will be no more lane closures on the parkway this week, after all.”

Although no lanes will be closed on the parkway for the rest of the week, crews will move to repairs on top of the bridge, causing lane closings and delays on Ashford Avenue, Calvi said. A stretch of roadway from Southfield Avenue to Saw Mill River Road will be closed at times from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to allow crews to install cables, which will support netting and planking work starting Monday, according to the county's press release.

“We have been assured one lane in both directions will be kept open at all times,” Calvi said. “No doubt this will cause traffic delays. Thus, please start planning your bridge trips either by departing earlier, or taking alternate routes.”

The repairs are part of a $1.5 million project approved after pieces of concrete fell from the bridge onto the New York State Thruway on June 22. The work is expected to be finished by winter, according to the press release. A more extensive $20 million rehabilitation is planned for the bridge, scheduled to be finished in 2017.
