ARDSLEY, N.Y. -- The Ashford Avenue Bridge connecting Ardsley and Dobbs Ferry along Route 9A reopened at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday after an overnight fatal car accident closed the bridge and sections of the Saw Mill Parkway below for more than eight to 10 hours.

A man was killed after he exited the Saw Mill Parkway going north at Ashford Avenue and continued through the exit ramp and over the bridge's roadway and sidewalk through a railing early Wednesday, police said. The unidentified man, who was alone in the 2010 Camaro, may have been going north after leaving a car meet in nearby Yonkers, according to several news reports.

The Ashford Bridge, which has been undergoing repairs over the last four year for other structural problems and is scheduled for more work later this year, sustained some damage. Its guardrail was hit by the car before it plunged nearly 40 feet to a grassy area along the parkway and a bike and running trail.

Westchester County, Dobbs Ferry and Ardsley police had closed off the bridge on both sides as several Westchester County accident investigators examined evidence on the parkway Wednesday morning. Police said four or five county detectives were also on the scene to interview witnesses to the crash.

The north side of the bridge remained closed to pedestrians as temporary repairs were made.
