The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its list of the safest vehicles for 2012.
Sixty-nine cars, 38 SUVs, five minivans, and three pickup trucks earned the highest prize of “top safety pick.” Based on ratings in IIHS evaluations, the award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover and rear crashes. The ratings cover all four of the most common crashes, and help car shoppers pick vehicles offering the highest levels of protection.
This year every major manufacturer had at least one vehicle on the list, but Subaru is the only automaker with a winner in every model it builds. Toyota, along with its Lexus and Scion brands, boasts 15 winners. General Motors follows with 14, followed by Volkswagen/Audi with 13. Ford/Lincoln and Honda/Acura have 12 awards each.
While several large pickup trucks are included on the list, not one small pickup was considered safe enough to make the cut.
