Calm Before the Storm in Dobbs Ferry

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Hurricane Irene has sent some in a sprint to the local grocery and hardware stores, but Martin North isn't too worried about the storm.

"It's very hilly, I doubt we'll have that much of a flood," North said. "I bought some food and stuff. I'm alone in my apartment, but I take pretty good care of myself."

North said these storms come and go and he believes the village will get hit, but he only has one real concern.

"Mine is we'll lose electricity and we won't be able to go in the refrigerator," he said.

Having lived in Dobbs Ferry for 80 years, North knows a thing or two about storms in the village. While many flocked to the stores to stock up on canned foods and bottled water, North didn't go overboard.

"I think I've got enough food to last me until Monday," he said of his light shopping.

Hurricane Irene is now a Category 3 hurricane and its winds could reach up to 130 miles per hour according to the National Weather Service . The storm has many worried about damage to their communities from flooding and intense winds. When asked about the worst storm in the area that he could remember, North doesn't even hesitate. In fact he knows the exact date.

"The worst I remember is 1947 when we had that terrible snow storm," he said. "It was December 26, the day after Christmas."

Not quite the same as a hurricane, but local residents are worried about potential damage nonetheless. North on the other hand isn't too concerned, especially because of the village's cleanup efforts.
