Christmas Brings Out Nostalgia

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Christmas is known as a day filled with gifts and celebration as it brings people families and friends together to enjoy the holiday.  It’s also a time for people to look back and wonder what exactly is the importance and meaning of Christmas outside of exchanging gifts.

“People are searching,” said Rev. Mary Grambsch of the Zion Episcopal Church.  “It feels like particularly in the last 10 years or so there’s a very heightened sense of looking for meaning about why are we here, what is my purpose, how should I be living, how can I live with integrity in a world that seems to be at odds with what I think is important.”

Grambsch said people come out to church in full force for Christmas as well.

“This is a time when I think peoples’ hearts are open,” she said.  “Some of it is for the nostalgia factor and there is also a very welcoming sense in the churches.”

With churches usually a lot more crowded than usual many wonder what the impetus exactly is.

“I think what ends up happening for many people is there’s a nostalgia factor and people remember going in their youth and it is a wondrous time,” Grambsch said.  ”The church is beautifully decorated with evergreen and they’re singing all these familiar carols that they grew up with.”
