DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. With toppings many would never dream of putting on a hot dog, the Dobbs Dawg House on Cedar Street is making a name for itself with its new twist on a classic dish.
Thats basically what it is, you take two things that you really like and you smash them together, said co-owner Mike Hamborsky. Everybody loves peanut butter and jelly, why dont we throw that on a hotdog? We tried it out and it was great.
The Dawg House opened in downtown Dobbs Ferry with a grand opening on Feb. 8, bringing another business to a district filled with several empty storefronts.
Theres more paper up on windows than there are signs so it seems like one of the things that really thrives in Dobbs Ferry is the restaurant culture, Hamborsky said.
He launched the business with his two buddies, Jeffrey Jee and Robert Dubilier, who was the executive chef at Vapiano and described by Hamborsky as "the mad scientist behind all these creations." Hamborsky said the idea for the restaurant grew from hours spent together doing everything from softball leagues to games of paintball.
We have these hot dog parties after softball games and stuff so Im like a hot dog connoisseur, Hamborsky said. I go through like a package a week on my own.
With so much time devoted to playing sports, Hamborsky said thats where the restaurants name actually originated from.
Basically were always in the dog house, Hamborsky said of the trios relationships with their significant others.
With a five star review on Yelp and several other positive reactions on Facebook, the untraditional eatery has been a popular addition to the downtown.
I love the place, I think the design of the place is awesome, said Dobbs Ferry resident Leslie Kahan. Its also really nice to have a place to go for the kids.
Hamborsky said bringing another business back to the downtown area was one of the most important factors when deciding where to set up shop.
Basically we said if the location came up, it had to be on Cedar Street, Hamborsky said. Im a townie, were all townies. We know its going to work here. The town has 27 pizza places, three sushi places and no place for a hot dog.
