Dobbs Ferry Author Shares Story Behind His Book

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Dobbs Ferry author Randy Jurgensen spoke to local residents on Monday night about his career as an NYPD detective, how it translated into the book he wrote and the inspiration behind it all.

“I was literally born and raised on the streets, not as a hoodlum, but I knew the streets inside and out,” Jurgensen said.

The book Jurgensen wrote, “ Circle of Six ,” focuses on his work on a case of a shooting in a Harlem mosque in 1972, the controversy behind it and the years he spent looking for the killer of his partner.

Jurgensen said the homicide rate was extremely high in the early 1970s in New York City so he dealt with an exorbitant number of murder cases throughout his career.

“We outdid Vietnam in 1971 in the city of New York,” Jurgensen said. “I can say without exaggeration I worked on and arrested over 350 killers.”

Jurgensen said living in Dobbs Ferry was a nice change of pace from his years hunting down criminals in New York City.

“Believe me, I love this village,” Jurgensen said. “I love this place. I feel so at peace in Dobbs Ferry.”

Jurgensen served as a Paratrooper and a Green Beret in Korea and he earned three Bronze Stars along with the Purple Heart, which was presented to him at West Point in 2009. He worked as a detective in Harlem for 16 years with the NYPD.

Using his work experience with the NYPD he began to transition into show business as Jurgensen both acted and worked on over 50 movies including "The French Connection" and "The Godfather."

“My career as a police officer helped because of the cases I worked on it really bumped into books that were being written and movies that were being made,” Jurgensen said. “We were out in the streets showing these actors how cops work.”
