DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The building at 413 Ashford Ave. in Dobbs Ferry will have to be torn down after a fire ravaged the unoccupied space Tuesday night.

“It was terrible,” said Dobbs Ferry Fire Chief Neil Sweeting. “We’re lucky somebody didn’t get killed last night."

The Dobbs Ferry Fire Department received a call at 7:10 p.m. on Dec. 9 and arrived to find flames coming from the basement door and a basement window.

Six Fire Departments — Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson, Ardsley, Irvington, Fairview and Tarrytown —battle the flames, and more than 100 firefighters fought the blaze while the Elmsford Fire Department was on standby.

Sweeting said the blaze was especially difficult to fight since the building had been renovated multiple times.

“There’s so many walls and doors,” said Sweeting.  “You’d open up a door and there’d be a wall behind it.”

The fire started in the boiler room in the basement and extended up to the first floor, burned through the two vacant storefronts in the front of the building.

The fire reached as far as the roof and took firefighters until 10 p.m. to get the flames under control.

“That building is going to have to come down,” said Sweeting.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and is being investigated by the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team and of the county’s emergency services department.
