Dobbs Ferry Crime: Value of Stolen Property Rises

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Criminal statistics from the past few years, made available by the Dobbs Ferry Police Department, reveals substantial increases in the value of stolen property along with a steady number of cases of burglaries and robberies.

Reports from the police department said the value of stolen property in 2011 skyrocketed compared to 2010.  In 2011 there was $642,722 reported in stolen property compared to $244,855 in 2010.  While some of the increase was due to valuables stolen from within cars, Dobbs Ferry Sgt. Marty Coster said much of the increase could be attributed to the three cars stolen from one resident alone last year.

“In one day, that was $200,000 worth of cars,” he said.  “They weren’t the only cars stolen, but during that day three or four of them stolen” were each worth between $60,000-$80,000 or more.

All statistics are compiled from the Dobbs Ferry Police Department and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services

According to Coster, there have been five burglaries thus far in 2012, 19 in 2011 and 19 in 2010 compared to 22 in 2006.  Two of the burglaries in 2012 have resulted in arrests of students from St. Christopher’s and Children’s Village, Coster said.

“There are residential facilities here and youths that are here for certain reasons,” he said. “It’s a factor in our numbers so far.”

Aside from talking with neighbors before going away and utilizing alarm systems, the Dobbs Ferry Police have a system to protect vacant houses as well.

“We have a dark house list we keep that people call us when they’re going away so we know certain residences people aren’t home and we know if they have alarms going off and whether the house is occupied,” Coster said.

Coster said the best thing local residents can do to avoid these kinds of incidents is to be aware and to report anything suspicious to police.

“We’re here 24/7, if there’s something that concerns you or something that happens in the middle of the night that’s out of the ordinary that awakens you or it just doesn’t seem right, it looks suspicious, call us,” he said.

  • In terms of larcenies, there have been 27 thus far in 2012, 134 in 2011, 124 in 2010 and 109 in 2006.
  • There were eight robberies in 2011 and five in 2010, which are up from four in 2006.
  • Statistics from the Dobbs Ferry Police Department reports there were six assaults in 2011, two in 2010, compared to six back in 2006.
