Dobbs Ferry, Hastings Libraries Ready for Summer

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Summer can often mean extra free time for children on vacation from school so the Dobbs Ferry and Dobbs Ferry public libraries will be running various programs over the break to help keep them busy.

“The most important thing is the summer reading game, which is what we do every summer,” said Cheryl Matthews, the children’s reference librarian in Dobbs Ferry.  “We’re trying to get the kids in here to read books.”

The Dobbs Ferry Public Library will be running several reading programs to encourage local children to pick up a few books.

“The way it works is every time you come into the library if you read, you play the game and you win a prize,” Matthews said.  “The whole idea is just to get the kids to read and they can play the game once a day, as long as they keep reading.”

Programs will be held in Dobbs Ferry for children of all ages throughout the summer including online reading games, Wii game days, origami workshops, discussion groups, movies and more.

The Hastings Public Library is running a reading program in conjunction with the school district to get students and parents to read the same book.  Hastings Public Library director Sue Feir said “This Beautiful Life” by Helen Schulman is the book designated for summer reading.  All of this will culminate in September with a program at the Hastings Public Library to discuss the book.

“It’s sort of like a mother-daughter book club, only for the whole community,” Feir said.

Incentives are even being offered in Dobbs Ferry for pre-registering for the summer reading program, with the raffle winner earning a Night Sky Monopoly game.

“Next Monday when the game begins, we’ll pull a name out of the jar and they’ll win the game,” Matthews said.  “Up until Monday morning you can pre-register.”
