Dobbs Ferry HS Senior Named Semifinalist for Nat'l Scholarship

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Regina Choi Ning Chan, a 17-year-old senior at Dobbs Ferry High School, said that earning a spot as a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship was encouraging, but it was really just something she achieved as a means of preparing for future exams.

"It was very rewarding and satisfying," Chan said of the honor. "It's kind of like a self confidence boost."

Chan, who is one of three semifinalists at Dobbs Ferry High School, said she has always been heavily involved at school. She is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate and is also a member of the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society. She said one of her true passions is math.

"Math is just something I've stuck with since I was in kindergarten," she said. "I've always liked math. It's something natural it's not like I have a particular reason for it."

She even studied Calculus I at Harvard University in a course last summer, which not many high school students can say they've experienced.

"There were adults taking it, there were biology teachers that needed to take a math class to complete a certain degree that were there and there were some college students too," Chan said.

Chan said she would like to pursue her passion in a math related career as perhaps a mathematician where she can come up with her own formulas.

"I didn't get my interest in math here because I didn't grow up here," she said. "I moved from Hong Kong six years ago. I grew up there and went to school there and that's where I had all these math competitions and math after school. I didn't think it was intense, it was something I liked doing."
