Dobbs Ferry Mourns the Loss of Joseph Omboni Jr.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Memorial services for 27-year-old Joseph Omboni began Wednesday at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry as friends and family shared memories from his life.

“In the simplest words, he was a legend,” said Mark Krizman. “Everybody knew him.  He won’t be forgotten.”

Many described Omboni, who died in a motorcycle accident on Sunday afternoon , as an upbeat, outgoing and friendly person.

“He went out of his way for everybody. No matter what he was doing, if you had a problem he would stop what he was doing to help you out,” Krizman said. “He always kept people up. Making people happy was his hobby.”

Omboni owned and ran Dobbs Ferry Automotive, but also gave his spare time to the village as a volunteer firefighter. Dobbs Ferry Fire Chief Jim Trezza said Omboni was in the department for seven years and he was always a friendly face.

“He was always smiling, always happy, did anything for anybody,” Trezza said.  “If you needed help with something he’d absolutely help you out. He was an outgoing kind of guy, always happy, always cracking jokes, always making everybody laugh.”

Visitation for Omboni will continue from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home, 64 Ashford Ave. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington.

As groups of residents who knew Omboni grieved together outside of the funeral home Wednesday afternoon, it was made clear that he won’t be forgotten.

“There’s really no comparison,” Krizman said.  “He was truly one of a kind.”
