Dobbs Ferry Music Series Finishes 13th Season

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Mark Morganelli has spent the last 13 summers bringing jazz to the Rivertowns, and this summer was no exception. Morganelli, founder of Jazz Forum Arts, hosts the last of 10 concerts in the Dobbs Ferry Summer Music Series Wednesday at Waterfront Park, and is already looking forward to next summer.

“We are very excited for next summer,” Morganelli said. “They are completing a multi-million dollar project at the park on the water front with a new stage. It’s going to be gorgeous.”

Morganelli said the upgraded park will make it easier to produce the concerts and allow a greater range of performers due to better accommodations and stage accessibility. Although he’s looking ahead, Morganelli was quick to praise this summer’s series as another successful year.

“It was great,” Morganelli said. “We had a very varied pallet of artists this year and they were well received by the audience. We’ve had crowds close to 1,000 on a good night.”

The weather mostly cooperated this summer, Morganelli said, and the concert only had to be moved indoors a few times. Aside from the weather and waterfront views, Morganelli said the appeal to the concert series is simple.

“People just really value interaction with their neighbors in a very informal and relaxed setting by the river with music and food,” he said. “Plus it’s free. It’s been 13 years and it’s become a major institution in our community.”

This summer was the first year the series was co-sponsored by Green Mountain Energy, a company that provides wind, solar and geothermal energy, Morganelli, which made it easier to plan the event financially. For next summer’s series, Morganelli said he’d like to incorporate more world music, especially Brazilian music, one of his favorite types.

The final concert beings at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Waterfront Park in Dobbs Ferry and will feature the Jazz Forum Arts Vocal Jazz winners.
