Dobbs Ferry Prepares for Flu Season in Schools

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- School is back in session in the village, which also means so is the watch for flu season . Nicole Hudson said her biggest precaution for keeping her two sons healthy is "lots of hand washing."

"If my child is sick and has obvious symptoms I would keep them home," Hudson said.

The New York State Department of Health recently released a seasonal flu guide for parents , which the Dobbs Ferry Union Free School District sent to local parents via email. In the email, Superintendent Lisa Brady encouraged parents and students to stay well as the flu season approaches.

"Keep your child at home when sick, don't come back to school until they're without a fever for 24 hours," said Elizabeth Basha, the nurse at the Dobbs Ferry High School/Middle School for the past five years.

If you're still on the fence about taking your child out of class, Basha said, it's better to be certain.

"I think that if they're really not sure they need to contact their primary care provider, especially if someone's had a fever for 24-48 hours," she said.

Children and infants are at a greater risk for getting seriously ill from the flu, according to the flu guide, which is why a flu vaccine could potentially save their life. The flu vaccine is recommended by the department of health for children six months and older.

Symptoms of the flu include feeling tired, high fever, headache, dry cough, sore throat, runny nose and sore muscles.

Basha said the school district has taken its share of precautions to keep flu outbreaks to a minimum, including Purell hand sanitizer stations throughout the school.

"Like most public facilities, it's pretty vigilant during flu season is about keeping common areas, tables, shared surfaces clean," she said.
