DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. ? Dobbs Ferry is putting a new face on an historic church cemetery that is the final resting place of residents who lived at the time of the Revolutionary War.

"The initial clearance phase of the project has begun," Dobbs Ferry Mayor Hartley Connett said of the Little White Church burial ground off Ashford Avenue. "The dead and dying trees are being removed, the evasive undergrowth and the unsightly hedgerow are also being cleared. This is all to make way for a new and beautiful open space, with the addition of a memorial monument."

The project, which includes repairs to head stones  dating to the late 1700s, is being funded solely from the village’s segregated recreation account at no cost to taxpayers.

Volunteers have stepped forward to help refurbish and replace headstones.

Plans for the renovation include a new fence with round spear point finials that will be installed along the edge of the property facing Ashford Avenue.

On-sight meetings are planned to review layouts for the monument commemorating Dobbs Ferry’s role in the American Revolution.

"It is exciting that this property will look a whole lot different in the spring than it does now," Connett said last month. "The goal is to transform this neglected property into a beautiful little historical park; an open place of solitude that residents can enjoy, and a destination for visitors to experience the history of Dobbs Ferry."
