Romeo Spiniello, home and career skills teacher and career day coordinator at Farragut Middle School in Hastings-on-Hudson, started the Career Day Fair for eighth-grade students eight years ago. Career Day is the culminating activity of the Career Awareness unit in the Home & Career Skills class.

The learning experiences achieved in the program include:

  • Heightened awareness of the world at work
  • Assuring students that all school subjects are necessary
  • Raising awareness of students to the fact that all careers are important to society
  • Providing insight into the personal goals and values necessary to inform career choices.

All eighth-grade students at Farragut participate in the fair, moving through five different rotations of guest speakers who speak on their career choice.

Students fill out a chart stating the careers or occupations they chose to listen to; what a typical day on the job would be like; what educational requirements are needed for the specific profession; what subjects do they feel have best prepared them thus far; and what would they suggest young students study for a career in the field.

The professions represented are based on students’ interests. This year’s Career Day Fair presenters were:

Dan Broden – TV Anchor and Reporter; Dave Dosin – Hastings Police Department; Gregory Jones – actor; Mark McCarthy – architect; Dan Nieman – engineer at Google; Mark Osborne – film animator; Jill R. Shellow – criminal defense lawyer; Maryjane Shimsky – Westchester County legislator; Slavica Stojkovska – United Nations, information technology.

“Increasing a student’s awareness of the relationship between what they learn in school and what they need on the job helps them understand that their classes are purposeful,” said Spiniello.
