Festivities Closing After 18 Years in Hastings

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Festivities has been a part of the Hastings downtown for nearly two decades, but the small business will be closing its doors on April 1. Festivities owner Taresa Caruso said after all these years she’s looking to step away from it all and take a breather.

“I’ve been here for 18 years, I live, breath, sleep, eat Festivities and it’s time to do something a little less involved,” Caruso said.

Caruso maintained that the decision to close down was solely hers and there was no “evil landlord” behind it all. While she has had family members pitch in and work at the Main Street shop, it has been almost entirely her working the counter all these years. The longtime business owner said she is looking forward to relaxing, but isn’t quite sure where it will take her.

“The store is so consuming I haven’t even had the chance to look out there,” Caruso said. “So once I get this wrapped up I’ll be able to start looking and if it takes a little time that’s fine because I’m kind of behind on the rest of my life.”

Having some free time on her hands for a change will be a welcome addition, but Caruso said she will miss the customers she’s befriended.

“The people have been a lot of fun, getting to know everyone has been great,” Caruso said. “I think I’ll probably miss being part of the community and being in the middle of it all.”

The departure of Festivities will leave an empty store front in downtown Hastings and Caruso had a bit of advice to any small businesses that could potentially fill the void.

“For new business owners I would say be prepared, it is all consuming,” Caruso said. “As wonderful as it seems, it is a commitment, so be prepared for long hours and a long ride.”

After nearly 20 years as a one-stop shop in the village, Caruso said this is anything but quitting the business, as she loves decorating and planning just as much as the day Festivities opened.

“I love decorating and being creative so being able to play with every season as it comes is great fun,” Caruso said.
