Police believe the 51-year-old Mount Vernon man in the relationship with the woman waited for her at the train station and ambushed her with a knife, according to the report.
Irvington fire chief Chris DePaoli is being hailed as hero in the incident. DePaoli fought off the attacker with a softball bat just before a nearby police officer used a taser on the man.
Irvington Mayor Brian Smith cited both men for their "heroism" when reached Wednesday night by Daily Voice.
"We are lucky to have such dedicated professionals at the Irvington Police Department, Irvington Fire Department and the Irvington Volunteer Ambulance Corps," Smith said on Thursday.
The woman, who sustained neck and back injuries, is in critical condition, officials said. The man is being hospitalized in stable condition surrounded by armed guards.
