HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Hastings Fire Chief James Sarfaty has been a member of the department for over a decade. The Daily Hastings caught up with the chief to ask him a few questions.
The Daily Hastings: How long have you been with the Hastings Fire Department?
Chief Sarfaty: I've been with the department for, let me think here, 16 years. That sounds about right. I was a volunteer in Larchmont prior to that.
The Daily Hastings: How did you get into working as a volunteer fire fighter?
Chief Sarfaty: My grandfather was a volunteer, my father was a volunteer, my father was chief in Larchmont and it's kind of in the blood I guess.
The Daily Hastings: What do you do as your full-time job?
Chief Sarfaty: I'm the general manager of Atlas Welding and Boiler Repair over in New Rochelle and it's a family owned business, not my family, but it's been in business 70 some odd years. It services the tri-state area, commercial welding and boiler repair in the city and New Jersey and Westchester.
The Daily Hastings: What is your favorite part of being a member of the Hastings Fire Department?
Chief Sarfaty: It's being a part of an organization that has members that are so committed to the wellbeing of their fellow neighbors. That's really what it is. One hundred plus members that are ready to serve at a moment's notice when the tones go out, they drop what they're doing and they respond to the issue at hand.
The Daily Hastings: What is something that people don't know or wouldn't expect about the fire department in the village?
Chief Sarfaty: Honestly, is that we're volunteers. We provide professional level services and a lot of the residents are under the assumption that we're paid and we're not.
