HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Global Sounds will be the theme of the evening when Friday Night Live returns to Hastings with its first event since December on Friday night. The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. and will consist of performances at three locations throughout the village.
We do this every year, said Hastings Recreation Assistant Lisa OReilly. Our main goal is to get people in town so I think itll be a good thing. We kind of want people to walk through town.
The community center will hold a childrens program from 6 to 7 p.m. with Shona Mbira Music of Zimbabwe with Nora Balaban and Banning Eyre.
Its going to be for the kids and were going to have drum circles and a musical performance and the kids will have an opportunity to come up and sing, OReilly said. Its a fun family event.
Following the childrens program will be a performance by Cheick Hamala Diabate at the Purple Crayon. Shona Mbira Music of Zimbabwe with Nora Balaban, Banning Eyre and Peter Lewis will cap off the night starting at 9 p.m. at the Rainwater Grill.
This upcoming FNL event is unlike many of the ones featured throughout the summer that are held outside in the streets. OReilly said it was still a little too cold to shut down the streets and money is also saved mainly for outdoor events like concerts.
Its just as much as we can afford to do because we have to pay for the police and everything else out of our own budget, it doesnt come out of the village budget, she said.
Green Mountain Energy is the main sponsor of this weeks FNL, which gets started with its first event in more than two months at 6 p.m.
I think its a great event, Im excited to do it, OReilly said. I think its a great opportunity for not just Hastings, but for the surrounding villages.
