HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- As Hastings crews work to clean up the streets, Village Manager Francis Frobel said he expected more from Tropical Storm Irene, but there is still work to be done.
"We've still got problems," he said. "We've got several neighborhoods without power."
Westchester was hit particularly hard with thousands of power outages, but Hastings appears to be one of the more fortunate areas in that regard.
"Maybe upwards of 25 homes without power right now," Frobel said. "It's been very spotty, thank goodness there hasn't been any kind of widespread outages."
At the peak of it all Frobel said there might have been approximately 35 homes without power.
"That's my estimate, I don't have an exact count," he said. "If they tell me there are 50 I'd be surprised."
Local readers have submitted photos of the damage caused by Tropical Storm Irene and Frobel said some residents are still dealing with issues.
"Our biggest problem is flooding. There's about seven homes, three for certain have water in the basement," he said. "They've still got basements being pumped out and that's the result of the Saw Mill River."
Hastings public safety employees have been meeting twice a day as they discuss the best course of action to get the village cleaned up as quickly as possible. Aside from flooding, another issue was trees taking down power lines in the streets.
"Once they kill the wires, public works just gets in, cuts up the tree and opens the road," Frobel said. "Then the Con Ed crew will come back and rehang the wires."
Frobel said that Con Ed estimates to have power back in the area on Thursday by the latest.
