HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- A sudden power surge and then loud popping noises from a power line were heard on Main Street in Hastings-on-Hudson before power was lost Monday near North Broadway, which was not restored Tuesday afternoon.

As of 1:30 p.m., Con Edison reports 1,987 customers are without power in Hastings, of its 3,436 village customers.  There was no estimated time of restoration.

Howling winds gusted to more than 70 miles per hour through Monday evening and into Tuesday morning across the area near Hastings Library and Village Hall, but there was little damage in the downtown area itself.

The Village of Hastings-on-Hudson was spared major damage, but police reported a number of fallen trees on the high ground above the village.

Officers patrolled the Hudson River banks parallel to the Metro-North train station at high tides, during which the river overflowed its banks in Hastings, Dobbs Ferry and Irvington.

A large tree branch laid in front of the American Legion building at Warburton Avenue and Spring Street in Hastings and large potted plants were thrown around in front of the Metro-North train station coffee shop.

Employees at Madaba grocery store on Warburton Avenue worked to maintain the store without power. Madaba's is normally opened 24 hours, seven days a week, but Sandy left the business without lights or power for refrigeration. The clerk said he hoped power would be restored by Tuesday evening.
