Hastings Library Offers Free Passes to Museums

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Hastings Public Library Director Sue Feir said offering free passes to local museums has put a smile on many faces recently.

“If you talk about libraries as culture, the mind and ideas, museums are a very appropriate, close cousin,” Feir said. “So the many museums make it financially attractive to buy a pass, it works for them. It gets people into the museum.”

The library is teaming up with the Museum of the City of New York and the Hudson River Museum to hand out free museum passes.

“It’s a great deal if people wanted to make a day in the city because both of these museums have rotating exhibits and make changes all the time,” Feir said.

Local residents with a library card can call to reserve a date in advance for their pass. Passes can be picked up on the reserved date and be returned to the library in person three days later.  The passes are not exclusive to Hastings residents. All that is required is a Westchester County library card. The library currently has two family passes that can be booked, one to each museum.

“I guess it’s like a virtual library,” Feir said. “All our programs are free to the public. It’s just extending the cultural world that’s available.”

This is the third year the library has offered passes to the Hudson River Museum and the first year it has offered passes to the Museum of the City of New York.

Feir said the program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, who are continually adding new perks for library users.

“The friends of the library increasingly support the things that are bought for patrons,” Feir said. “They’re not just the frosting on the cake, they’re the frosting and the sprinkles on the cake.”
