Montesano detailed the system's current methods and outlined tighter measures that will be implemented in the coming weeks. The district includes Hillside Elementary School of Hillside Avenue and the connected Farragut Middle School and Hastings High School on Farragut Avenue.
"Currently, we continue to keep all outside doors locked at our three buildings, using only one single door to enter and exit," Montesano said in a statement. "These doors are being manned by a staff member, who is also greeting visitors as they arrive and leading them to the main office to obtain a visitor’s badge."
Montesano said the Hastings Police Department is assisting with security efforts, including a walk-through of each building as part of its daily routine.
For after-hours access during sports, musical and other events at the Farragut Complex, two doors are available – the main doors to the high school and Cochran Gymnasium on School Street.
"In the weeks ahead, we will be changing the key-and-lock approach to our doors to a card-swipe system for faculty and staff access," Montesano stated.
"Additionally, we will examine the feasibility and cost of providing a 'greeter' at each building, as well as the possibility of installing a buzzer and camera system at each main entrance."
