Hastings Seniors Partying All Week Long

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The eighth annual senior week brings out nearly 100 seniors each day with various events at the Embassy Community Center, and Dobbs Ferry senior Roz Navarra said the celebratory week helps keep them young.

“It’s just party time. Everybody likes a party,” she said.

Navarra said the event is a way to bring out seniors from the quad villages and is a way for them to meet some new friends.

“Part of it is to introduce the program to the seniors. We see a lot of new faces along with the old faces,” she said. “The tables are mixed up every day, so people are socializing with different people.”

With events ranging from tai chi classes to a birthday party, small concerts and even a little karaoke, Pierrette Rissland said the week has been a huge success.

“I think it honors the seniors. It gives the seniors that don’t know about us a chance to join us for a day,” said Rissland, who is the director of senior services in Ardsley and a Dobbs Ferry senior advocate. “The week has been packed. It’s just been well-received. We’ve had 80 to 90 people each day and new people, too. The seniors love this week.”

Local seniors such as Hastings resident Fran Giovannetti said the week has been a great way to fill out her calendar.

“I’ve been very, very busy, but it’s been a lot of fun,” she said. “I’ve been adopted (by the people at the Community Center), and every time I go on vacation they ask me what took so long to get back.”

Dobbs Ferry senior advocate Abby Connett said the idea for the celebration originated as a way to spread the word about the Community Center’s programs and let seniors know that it’s a place to come and socialize.

“We were really banging our heads on the wall to let people know of all of our programs ,” she said. “There are so many people it’s easy to come in new, because it can be very hard for a senior to come in as a new person.”

The senior week will cap off its celebration on Friday with a dinner dance, with food donated by local restaurants. The Garden Club will be at the Embassy Community Center , 60 Palisade St., at 10:30 a.m., followed by yoga at 11 a.m. and a complimentary lunch at noon before the dinner at 5 p.m.

Rissland said simply getting seniors out to chat with their peers is the best part about the programs.

“One of the biggest things is to come down, have a cup of coffee and communicate with people and just have a conversation,” she said.
