Hastings’ Share Group Holds First Walkathon Sunday

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Jeanne Newman, founder of SHARE the Project Inc., will take on yet another fundraising opportunity with the organization’s first Walk for SHARE this Sunday, April 29, at Hastings' Reynolds Field.

“We decided the spring would be a wonderful time to do a walk, everybody does walks, we figured we would give it a go try,” Newman said. “The walk starts at 11 a.m. and I’m one of those people who just say ‘come early stay late.’ Knock yourself out, have a great time, walk around the track, get off your bum and get some exercise.”

Money from the walk will be donated to SHARE’s general fund, which feeds a variety of programs including its annual Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless, a community service scholarship, Midnight Run initiatives and others.

“It’s an all-inclusive fundraiser,” Newman said.

The SHARE project is known by many for the Thanksgiving dinners that it hosts for the homeless throughout New York City and surrounding areas.

“We decided that we were developing this wonderful relationship with the folks on the street in New York,” Newman said. “We decided we wanted to get even more intimate. So we thought what would be a better way of doing it than having a Thanksgiving dinner for them.”

Newman said her organization had a modest beginning back in 1988 after some time volunteering with Midnight Run.

“It was something that I thought up probably after eating a peanut butter sandwich or something, but it was a small invention of mine and a group of Hastings High School kids,” said Newman, who retired from teaching art and photography in 2007. “It was born on my porch.”

Donations for the walk can be made per lap or in a lump sum and burgers, hot dogs, drinks, chips and even T-shirts will be sold to benefit the project. While Newman said they accept all donations, she is looking to get people physically involved in this particular fundraiser.

“I just think it’s neat to get out there and be part of the community,” Newman said. “It’s so easy to just write a check. It’s so hard to get people up out of their chair and do something so of course I want people to walk.”
