Hastings to Utilize LED Lights in Street Lamps

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. –The street lights that line the sidewalks in Hastings will soon start to shine a little brighter one by one this winter.

The Hastings Board of Trustees approved the purchase of a warranty extension from five years to 10 years for the 70 LED street lights the village is buying.

“I thought small money, new technology, I just don’t want anyone saying they conked out and they have to replace them at our expense,” said Hastings Village Manager Fran Frobel.

The lights will come at a unit price of $28.75 each for a total cost of $2,012.50, according to the board of trustees’ most recent agenda.  There are currently only two LED lights being used in Hastings street lamps.

“We only have two down here that we installed probably a year ago as samples at the entrance to Village Hall,” Frobel said.

The village will receive the shipment of lights in a few weeks and begin to slowly install them throughout the streets.  Frobel said the village will install three to four a day so by spring they should all be up.

There are several advantages to making the switch to LED lights in the lamps that line the streets of Hastings.

“They’re cheaper to operate, considerably cheaper,” Frobel said.  “You’re getting the same or better illumination with less wattage and it’ll last longer. They have a longer life expectancy.”

Frobel said the village expects to save nearly $9,000 a year in energy and maintenance costs with the new bulbs with a full payback of just under three years.

In response to any residents who may feel the new lights may be too bright or cast light in too wide of a scope, Frobel downplayed any concerns, but also offered a possible contingency plan.

“I don’t think people will have a problem,” he said.  “What we can do though is there are ways that we can angle the light and there are certain things we can do to tweak that if it becomes a problem.  I think overall, people will be very satisfied with it.”
