HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Friends and residents of Andrus on Hudson in Hastings gathered Thursday to celebrate the 107th birthday of the senior care community's eldest resident Annetta Bigley.
Mrs. Bigley sat quietly surrounded by balloons and decorations and acknowledged her friends, Andrus residents and staffers and several members of the media who were on hand for the party.
The partygoers joined the Hudson Valley singers in singing "Happy Birthday" and several other songs. "It's nice to see everyone here," she said just before blowing out the candles on her cake. Bigley was born Annetta Reid Humphries on May 30, 1906. She married Harold Bigley on February 23, 1935. Harold passed away in 1981. She worked in Manhattan for many years as a supervisor of office staff and then in the Hastings-on-Hudson school system as an assistant to the superintendant. After having lived in Hastings-on-Hudson at LaBaranaca apartments, Annetta moved to Millwood for a few years, and then returned to Hastings when she entered Andrus on Hudson in 2006. Hastings-on-Hudson Village Justice Joseph DiSalvo, who is Bigley's attorney and a family friend for 25 years, was on hand for the celebration. "Annetta has no children, so her good friends have been close by since she came to Andrus in 2006," DiSalvo said. "She is a wonderful woman. She came to Hastings and worked in the schools for a long time. I know she is enjoying this very much." Reaching 107 years is an uncommon achievement. Bigley is the oldest resident at Andrus on Hudson since the facility opened in 1953. Two others have reached th age of 106. The average life expectancy in the United States is currently 78.7 years. At 113 years old, Jeralean Talley of Detroit i s the oldest living person in the country.
