Large Tree Uprooted by Irene Topples in Hastings

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Tropical Storm Irene’s eye had come and gone Sunday evening when Judy Henry heard what she believed was a tree limb fall against her Hastings home at about 7:15 p.m. as the storm’s following winds whipped the neighborhood.

“The winds were really strong after the storm had gone,” said Henry, whose house is located at the corner of Tompkins Ave. and Mariana Drive. “It sounded like a big limb hit the side of the house, but when I came out to look it was the largest tree on the property.”

Tropical Storm Irene left major flooding in the community and rain subsided just after noon on Sunday when winds on the back end of the storm kicked up. A quick drive through the village revealed down tree limbs on North Broadway that knocked out power lines. The Henry tree was completed uprooted, revealing a double-root base about four feet high and 12 feet wide sitting in the front yard.

“I’ve lost several trees over the 17 years I’ve been here,” Henry said. “I was worried about the two trees in the back yard next to the house. This one is so big that I thought it would hold. It’s just my luck. But the top limbs hit the house, so it didn’t cause a lot of damage.”

Henry’s neighbors were on hand to give support and handyman Guillermo Sanchez began cutting away branches that lay against the side of Henry’s home early Monday.

“This is a big one,” Sanchez said. “When the wind came after all the rain, it just came out of the ground. We’re going to cut it up. Good thing it didn’t fall more toward the house.”

Henry seemed resigned to being a victim of the storm. “These things happen,” she said. “I’m just glad no one was hurt.”
