WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- With yet another winter storm again poised to derail the start of another week, school officials were set to make a difficult call come Monday morning.

“It’s a tough one because a lot hinges on temperature,” Joseph Ricca, Superintendent of Elmsford Union Free School District, said Sunday. “It’s one of those storms where depending on the temperature, we could get hit with all snow, we could get hit with freezing rain and sleet, or it could just be all rain here.”

Ricca and numerous other school superintendents did wind up making the call to close on Monday morning. For an updated list of school closings, click here.

The storm is expected to bring a mix of rain, sleet and snow to the area, with areas farther north receiving more snow, and possible significant ice accumulation in areas farther south. Boston is projected to receive 12 inches or more of snow from this storm.

Snow began falling across parts of the area Sunday, with the storm expected to strengthen in the overnight hours with more snow, freezing rain and ice. It is the third Monday in a row with heavy snow in the forecast.

Meteorologist Gary Lessor, assistant director of the Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn., said the three-week streak of early week storms isn’t out of the ordinary, in fact, “it’s just how weather patterns work.”

“This is actually typical, where you get into a pattern like this,” Lessor said. “We’re already predicting another storm in the forecast for Thursday.”

Ricca said he was plugged in Sunday, with his laptop, phone and television all set to local weather forecasts. He said he and the district are working hard to get a decision out as soon as possible, as last-minute calls put a burden on parents.

“Any superintendent you talk to will tell you he or she hates the winter,” Ricca said. “They hate the winter because at the end of the day it’s your call whether or not school is canceled, delayed or on.”

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for all of Westchester from midnight Monday through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Up to one quarter of an inch of ice is expected in areas farthest south, with snow accumulations of between 1 and 3 inches. Inland areas could see 2 to 4 inches of snow with up to 3 to 6 inches in parts of Northern Westchester and Putnam possible.
