Local Authors to Celebrate Children's Book Day

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. –Alyssa Capucilli, who has lived in Hastings for the past 25 years, will be just one of the many local authors on hand at Celebrate Children's Book Day at Washington Irving's Sunnyside on Sunday.

"It's wonderful," said Capucilli author of the popular "Biscuit" books. "First of all the setting is beautiful, then just the chance to join together not only with your colleagues, but with book lovers of every age and it's just a very, very joyful day."

The day celebrates over 60 children's book authors from all over Westchester County, including municipalities like Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington, and Ossining.

Capucilli said she has written and published about 75 books and her work is something that has grown from her passion.

"I've been writing for children for about 18 years and I always loved to write and then having my own children and reading literature that I loved inspired me to begin writing my own," she said

Having written so many children's books, Capucilli said she takes pride in her work being some of the earliest books in a child's life.

"For many children this is the first book that they can read all by themselves," she said.

Celebrate Children's Book Day is sponsored by Sunnyside Federal Savings and Loan of Irvington and will take place from 12 to 6 p.m. There will also be life sized costumed characters walking around during the event, including Clifford the Big Red Dog, Bunnicula, Biscuit and Franklin the Turtle.

"I think [the goal is] just sharing the love of books really," Capucilli said. "It's just a great way to generate excitement and enthusiasm about reading."

Book lovers are in luck as authors and illustrators will be on hand Sunday for readings, demonstrations and even signings. There will also be tours available of Washington Irving's home throughout the day. Tickets for the event are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $6 for children 5-17 and free for children under five and Historic Hudson Valley members. Tickets can be purchased here .
