HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. A 54-year-old Yonkers man suffered wrist cuts and "heavy blood loss" when he fell down a steep embankment behind a Warburton Ave. home, Hastings police reported.
Police received the call just after 5:30 p.m. Saturday. They said the man was doing tree work behind his brother's home when he lost his footing and fell. The mans brother went to check on him at some point and saw that he had fallen and called police.
Sgt. Andrew Hayden, who was first on the scene, scaled approximately 15 to 20 feet down the bank to the man, who was weak, but conscious. Police officer Michael Pacheco also climbed down the embankment to assist the injured man. The officers said the man had been on the bank for an extended time.
Ill say [he fell] maybe 15 feet, at about a 45 degree angle. It was pretty steep, Pacheco said.
The officers administered first aid before the fire department arrived. They said both the man's arms were cut.
We wrapped both his wrists because of the blood. We secured his neck and waited for the paramedics to arrive, Pacheco said. I think it was like a half-hour [total], but it felt like five minutes.
The Fire Department had to drive its Ladder 22 truck down to the Hubbard trail in order to extend its ladder to reach the man.
The man complained of neck and lower back pain, so the officers and firefighters stabilized his neck and put him on a board before moving him. The Fire Department moved the man on the board into a basket that was tied to the ladder to get him off the embankment.
All in all they did a phenomenal job, really, said Hastings Lt. David Dosin.
The Yonkers man was transported to Westchester Medical Center by a Hastings ambulance.
