The college participated in a retiring of the colors (U.S. flag) ceremony at the Dobbs Ferry campus on Wednesday, March 18.

The flag was retired so that the flagpole could be taken down as construction continues on the new dorm. When the dorm is completed, a new flag will be raised at a new location. The retired flag will be displayed at a prominent location on campus.

"It’s events like these, showing honor and respect, that make me very proud to be a student at Mercy College,” said Felix Camacho, a freshman student in marketing in the School of Business, veteran and member of the ceremony’s Honor Guard.

The event included the singing of the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance and playing of bagpipes as the flag was lowered. Mercy College faculty, staff and students stood at attention, in silence, and saluted the flag as it was slowly lowered down the pole.

An Honor Guard of soldiers representing student veterans of Mercy College, New York Army National Guard and the New York Guard carefully folded the flag and presented it to Mercy College President Timothy Hall.

“It reminds all of us why we serve -- to protect freedom and democracy and strive for peace,” said Glenn Marchi, director of safety and colonel in the New York Guard.
