The Title V Step Up to STEM summer program is an innovative way to engage students and demonstrate how the STEM fields are relevant in real-life scenarios. The camp will be held at Mercy College's Manhattan campus through Thursday, Aug. 7.
“This summer program prepares students to face many kinds of disasters they could face in the future, and in so doing develops their self-confidence and awareness of the world around them," said camp organizer Peter Poole.
"By relating science, technology, mathematics and psychology to real-world situations, students learn that STEM doesn’t stop when they exit the classroom – these are skills they can use in their lives and to propel them into productive and exciting careers,” he said.
The camp is free and open to high school seniors, college freshmen and sophomores and students pursuing STEM majors, including psychology.
This innovative program was developed by both Mercy College and Borough of Manhattan Community College faculty: Michael Rivera (science), Narasim Banavara (technology), Alberto Manzi (psychology), Marion Ben-Jacob (mathematics) and Yana Durmysheva. This program is supervised by Mercy College School of Education Dean Alfred S. Posamentier.
