Missing Wallaby Spotted Again In Westchester

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Indy, the North Salem wallaby that's been missing for more than two years, has been spotted back in town.

According to Susan Bush, who cared for Indy with her husband, Warren Saks, Indy was spotted on Dingle Ridge Road Tuesday.

"We are happy that he has survived all of the challenges of living in the wild year- round," Bush said. "Now we are concerned about hunting season where, in color and facial structure, he resembles a young deer."

He was previously spotted in a neighbor's backyard on Titicus Road in July, near where Bush and Saks live.

"I can't help but think that he was trying to find his home," Bush said of Indy being back on Titicus Road. "That is truly amazing as so little is known about the homing instincts of a wallaby, its memory capability or as its more domesticated memory of a home."

Indy was reported missing in March 2014. Bush and Saks believe he ran out of their fenced yard after deer broke their fence and frightened him. Since he went missing, wallaby sightings have popped up all over Westchester.

Bush said Indy doesn't make noise, so if he was standing at the door, they would have no way of knowing it.

"I'm hopeful that he can come home soon," Bush said. "I don't know how he has survived the winters."

Bush said they tried to donate Indy to a zoo but were rebuffed since the zoos already had wallabies and Indy is neutered.

"If we were to get him back, we would still try and place him in a setting where he could be free," Bush said earlier this summer. "We want him to be outside with other wallabys."

Indy had been a member of the family for five years after their son rescued him from someone in upstate New York who took Indy to schools and kept him in a playpen.

Saks said Indy likes to eat roses and loves the outdoors. He also feeds on wheat thins, Triscuits, rice cakes and sweet potatoes.
