NBA Commish Among Top Local Political Donors

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Greenburgh, Eastchester and Scarsdale are doling out the funds for their political favorites.

Among the heaviest hitters is NBA Commissioner and Scarsdale resident David Stern.

Stern and his wife, Dianne, have each contributed $30,800 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in the 2012 election cycle, the maximum amount an individual is allowed to give, according to OpenSecrets.org.

Together, the couple has also kicked in a total of $18,300 to four different Democratic politicians, including a Florida Senator, a United States Senator from Ohio, a congressman from New Mexico and Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Harrison), OpenSecrets reports.

But Stern isn’t the only Scarsdale resident opening his wallet. Scarsdale residents in the 10583 zipcode, which also includes parts of Greenburgh and Eastchester, have been the most generous, already giving $1.6 million in the 2012 election cycle.

That is more than the rest of the two towns combined.

The big winner of Scarsdale's handouts has been presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. The Republican candidate has collected just under $220,000, roughly 80 percent of his campaign contributions in Greenburgh.

President Barack Obama (D) is second in Scarsdale contributions with $145,000, followed by New York State Sen. Kristin Gillibrand (D) ($106,000).

In total, residents of Greenburgh, including villages and the unincorporated town, and Eastchester have contributed over $2.6 million to political candidates and committees in the 2012 election cycle as of April 11.

Notable contributors included Dobbs Ferry philanthropist Marie McKellar who has donated over $71,000 to two Democratic political parties and three individual candidates.

And in Irvington, corporate lawyer Rodge Cohen and his wife Barbara have donated just over $60,000 to the Democratic National Committee.

But it wasn’t the individual candidates who saw the most gain from the political contributions. Six of the top 10 recipients, including No. 1 on the list, the Democratic National Committee, were fundraising groups or action committees.

The Top 10 Recipients of Greenburgh and Eastchester political contributions so far in the 2012 election cycle:
