According to Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC), employees are preparing the final driving surface of the new bridge in anticipation of the traffic shift. The operation will shift four northbound/westbound traffic lanes of the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) to the first span of the new bridge during the overnight hours on Friday, Aug. 25, or early Saturday, Aug. 26.

TZC is also continuing work on the new maintenance facility in Tarrytown along with footing and retaining wall construction for the new State Police facility.

Additional work includes:

  • Structural steel installation on eastbound span
  • Landing preparation for traffic shift
  • Temporary barrier installation
  • Fence installation
  • Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
  • Survey inspections on the existing bridge
  • Pier substructure work
  • Expansion joint operations
  • Internal tower work
  • Maintenance dock construction
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing

Boaters are reminded to check for periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction through the end of the year. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures.

Times and dates of the closures appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed @NewNYBridge, and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. TZC can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.
