A sunken shipwreck near Haiti is believed to contain the long-lost remains of the Santa Maria, Christopher Columbus' flagship on his first voyage to the Americas.
Underwater explorer Barry Clifford, who led a team that found and investigated the wreck, says he's confident it is the ship.
If the claim is confirmed, it would go down as one of the most significant underwater archaeological discoveries ever.
Scott Ryan. a marine biologist who lives in Ossining and teaches science in Ardsley, said he thought the news was great.
"That's awesome," Ryan said. "That's so fabulous. I really wish I was the person who found it."
Ryan said the water is an unknown infinite resource. He said he hopes more ships can be found.
"It's great to get these ships up and see what they were like, what kind of cargo they had," Ryan said. "What kind of living conditions did they have? We should get the boat up and restore it. That would be a treat."
Ryan has explored the water before but has not come across any buried treasure or sunken ships.
"Just bottles," Ryan said.
Ryan's love of the water extends to a brewery and restaurant that he hopes to open along the Hudson in Ossining sometime next year.
