HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. –  Saturday delivery of first class mail will be discontinued, beginning in August, in a money-saving move, the United States Postal Service announced Wednesday.

The change will only effect mail delivered to homes and businesses. Mail will still be delivered to post office boxes on Saturdays. Post offices now open on Saturdays will remain open on Saturdays.

The Postal Service said the measure is expected save $2 billion annually. The Postal Service reported a loss of $14.7 million in 2012.

Package delivery, which has increased 14 percent since 2010, will continue on a six-day schedule.

Delivery of letters and other mail has declined with the increasing use of email and other Internet services.

Rivertowns residents were quick to comment on The Daily Voice's Facebook page.

"My dad worked six days a week as a postal carrier," Denise Bednarczyk said. "I support the five-day week."

"I think it's a great idea," Diane Muñiz-Forcelli said.

Jaime Geiger of Tarrytown doubted the organization's ability to save money.

"They couldn't save two cents doing anything," Geiger said.
