Relive the 1970's in Dobbs Ferry

If you're feeling nostalgic this weekend, then head down to the Mead House in Dobbs Ferry for a taste of the 1970's.

The Dobbs Ferry Historical Society will be hosting "Our 70's Show" Saturday evening at the Mead House. The Historical Society invites residents to come out and relive the 70's from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The 70's fundraiser was created to help get people interested in local history outside of the famous Revolutionary War events in Dobbs Ferry.

"We wanted to make people interested in local history and not just the Revolutionary War, which people are very into in Dobbs Ferry," said Ruth Gastel, chairman of the event.

The Historical Society tries to have fundraisers that are different from the rest, yet still celebrate the history of the village. Last year the Mead House hosted a fund raiser centered on a brewery opened in the Palisades area back in the 1850's. The 1970's seemed like a unique way to draw people out while still raising money for the society. The fact that this is "history people could reminisce about" is a huge selling point for the event according to Gastel.

"We've wanted to do something different [to raise money] so we decided we should make people aware of history that some people have lived through or peoples parents have lived through," Gastel said.

The 70's fundraiser will feature all the fashions, music, food and drinks of the era as there will be plenty of activities for those in attendance. The Historical Society has put together a timeline of events that runs from 1970 to 1979 touching on everything from national news to what was happening in Dobbs Ferry at the time. The Mead House will also have posters on display with newspaper clippings collected from the time to remind people of what Dobbs Ferry was like in the 70's.

"Certainly when people come here they will be amazed at how much work went into it and all the memories it brings back," Gastel said.

Tickets for the event are $45 and all proceeds will go to the Dobbs Ferry Historical Society.

"What we need the money for is us to keep this marvelous building, the Mead House, in good condition," Gastel said. "We've totally renovated it wherever there's been a problem that's needed work."

Everyone who plans on attending is also encouraged to come in a costume or a 70's outfit to help showcase just how much times have changed.

"We're hoping to have a fun time looking at what people are wearing," Gastel said.
