Road Delays Upcoming in Hastings to Fix Gas Line

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Local residents may need to alter their commuting habits starting Monday due to a Con Edison gas line project in Hastings.

Hastings police said the job is “a major dig and gas line project” that will take place on Southside Ave starting Monday and lasting until May 21. There will be several restrictions during this time, such as no parking on Southside Avenue between Washington Avenue and the commuter parking lot.

“In addition, and perhaps more importantly, Southside Avenue will be closed daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to allow this work to move more quickly and to shorten the time frame of the inconvenience,” said Hastings Chief of Police David Bloomer in a press release.

This construction is one Hastings mayor Peter Swiderski said will be disruptive, but it is something residents will have to endure.

"There’s no sugar-coating this one; it’s going to be very disruptive and unpleasant,” Swiderski said.

Police said residents looking to access the commuter lot should approach from Maple Avenue and then drive south on Southside Avenue

“The work will be completed each day no later than 4 p.m. so the return trip should not be too inconvenient,” Bloomer said in the statement.  “I would encourage all commuters to avoid the Washington Ave/Southside intersection even after 4 p.m. as the road will be plated and in disrepair, although passable.”

In his message Swiderski said residents should look to avoid coming down Washington Avenue and should consider carpooling or walking if possible. With Friday Night Live coming up this weekend, Swiderski said it will be a good way to relax before the start of the construction.

“We might all need the fun and frivolity of Friday Night Live to brace ourselves for that disruption on Monday,” he said.
