Seshadri was honored for his work "3 Sections," which the Pulitzer Prize committee called in a statement "a compelling collection of poems that examine human consciousness, from birth to dementia, in a voice that is by turns witty and grave, compassionate and remorseless."

Seshadri was born in India and came to the United States at the age of five, according to the Poetry Foundation. He earned a BA from Oberlin College and an MFA from Columbia University.

He is a former editor of "The New Yorker."

Seshadri will receive a prize of $10,000 for winning the award.
