Social Media Provide Outlet For Corey-Ocho Friends

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Local residents and fellow classmates expressed their thoughts, support and sadness on Twitter, Facebook and blogs in the wake of the tragic death of Martha Corey-Ochoa , Dobbs Ferry High School’s 2012 valedictorian.

Corey-Ochoa had just begun her life as a freshman at Columbia University when she apparently jumped from a 10th-floor window of her dorm building around 11 p.m. Monday. Columbia University and the Dobbs Ferry schools superintendent both released statements hailing Corey-Ochoa as a brilliant and promising student.

  • “Aching for Martha Corey-Ochoa who jumped to her death last night, her first day at Columbia,” Whitney Hess said on Twitter. “A reminder to SEEK HELP in your darkest moments.”
  • “My thoughts and heart to Martha Corey-Ochoa, her family & friends, & the CU family,” said Ella Wagner . “We are diminished without her presence and promise.”
  • “I am so very said,” ljndawson said on Twitter. “I lived across the hall from her parents 20 years ago – my heart goes out to them.”
  • “I don't even know where to begin,” said Robin Goldberg Altman on Facebook. “This is so sad. I don't know the family at all, but my heart breaks for them.”
  • “Praying for the family of Martha Corey-Ochoa during their trying time of bereavement,” Terranisha said on Twitter.
  • “RIP to the Columbia freshman, Martha Corey-Ochoa, who died last night on campus,” Nzingha Prescod said on Twitter.

In the wake of Corey-Ochoa’s death, Columbia students also offered support to one another on Bwog , the online counterpart to Columbia’s undergraduate magazine, The Blue and White. Denisha Bacchus, who graduated in May, said she provided her email on the blog for students who want to talk about Corey-Ochoa’s death, but aren’t comfortable talking to a counselor or friends. Several other current and former Columbia students expressed their condolences for Corey-Ochoa’s family and friends.
