Speyer Directs Farmers Market in Dobbs Ferry

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Bettina Speyer helped start the farmers market in Dobbs Ferry nine years ago, but she says this will be her last year organizing it. Even after working as the market director for several years, Speyer admits it's still a work in progress.

"I'm doing this as a volunteer, I'm learning on the spot," she said.

Born in New York to immigrant parents, Speyer moved back to Europe when she was 5 and spent the next 35 years there. She then moved back to the U.S when she was 40. Now 56-years-old, Speyer has tried everything from working in the import/exports industry to teaching French at Mercy College. Living in Dobbs Ferry since 1996, she said she just wants to help make the community as strong as possible. This desire helped spawn the farmers market.

The famers market used to be held on the waterfront, in an attempt to reel in customers coming off the train, but eventually Speyer decided to move it up into the downtown.

Asked to describe the farmers market, Speyer insisted it's not an extravagant event of sorts.

"We're not an event," Speyer said. "This is truly more like the European style, a sidewalk vendor."

Speyer is also the chair of the Festa Committee, helping plan the annual Ferry Festa so she undoubtedly has her hands full. Some may worry about taking on too much, but Speyer believes it's her duty as a resident.

"When you move into an area, you have a responsibility to support your community," she said.

With Speyer taking a back seat after this year it may be time for someone else to handle the farmers market responsibilities.

"This is my last year, I think it's time for somebody else to step up," she said.
