DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Parents filled the Springhurst Elementary School auditorium to listen to Principal Julia Drake introduce the school's teachers and staff Tuesday night. Tuesday night was Back to School night for kindergarten, first and second graders at Springhurst.

"I've been in a number of schools and this is truly a remarkable place," Drake said. "We would be nowhere if it were not for a supportive home."

Superintendent Dr. Lisa Brady, Board of Education President Lynne Black and Kimberly Sutherland, the vice president of the PTSA, among others spoke to the large crowd. Black spoke to the audience about the importance of volunteering time to the Board of Education and encouraged parents to participate. Black said it's the teamwork between the parents and the staff that makes the school district so strong.

"I can't think of anything more wonderful than your child getting a great education," Black said.

After a few brief speeches from various members of the school district, the group broke off onto their own to explore the school and its many classrooms. Parents were encouraged to sit in on a classroom and listen to presentations from the teachers.

"As a parent I really would want to see where my child was learning," Drake said. "It's also good for them to see the work and experience what their child experiences."

It's a new year for students in Dobbs Ferry and Back to School night marks the beginning for parents.

"It's setting the groundwork for what parents should expect this year," Drake said.
