State Assembly OKs Hotel Occupancy Tax For Greenburgh

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Town of Greenburgh could impose a hotel/motel occupancy under a bill passed Thursday in the New York State Assembly.

The bill now moves to the State Senate for consideration. Sponsored by Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (D-Greenburgh/Mt. Pleasant), the legislation also applies to

Greenburgh's villages and the village of Sleepy Hollow in the Town of Mount Pleasant.

“These municipalities provide additional services because of the presence of hotels within their boundaries,” said Abinanti.

“Property taxpayers need relief and municipalities need additional non-property tax sources of revenue to fund basic services.” The legislation also requires the municipality levying the tax to use one-sixth of the taxes collected to promote economic development and tourism. “It is unfair that Greenburgh, the second largest municipality in Westchester, cannot collect an occupancy tax while several smaller municipalities can,” Abinanti said.
