HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. As summer officially began on Wednesday, temperatures soared into the mid-90s around the region.
Temperatures peaked at 94 degrees Wednesday afternoon, and pools around town did their best to accommodate residents seeking relief from the heat. The Chemka Pool in Hastings opened at noon Wednesday, two hours earlier than usual, and is already planning for the steamy weekend that's predicted.
We will open at 12 noon and be open until 8 p.m. [on Thursday], officials of the Hastings Recreation Department said in a message to residents. We are already scheduled to be open from 12 noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
A heat advisory has also been issued in the Lower Hudson Valley until 8 p.m. Thursday. Hastings offers tips to stay cool on its village website.
Temperatures Thursday are predicted to reach a high of 96 degrees, with zero chance of rain, before cooling off slightly for the weekend.
Fridays forecast calls for a high of 90 degrees with a 40 percent chance of rain and scattered thunderstorms.
On Saturday, a high of 84 degrees is expected, under partly cloudy skies, with a zero percent chance of rain.
Sundays forecast predicts a partly cloudy day with a high of 83 degrees and a 10 percent chance of rain.
