Take a Look at the Top 10 Stories of 2011

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - It’s been a year full of breaking news and interesting stories throughout the villages.  With so much happening in 2011, we have compiled a list of the top 10 stories of the year.  Take a look below at some of the biggest local stories from the past year.

Hurricane Irene ended up being tropical storm Irene, but nevertheless the damage was done in the villages.  Many were without power for days as fallen branches downed tree lines and flooding made a mess of the Saw Mill Parkway and other roadways.

It’s been a relatively warm fall and early winter, which made the snowstorm that hit in October all the more unexpected.  Village municipalities were prepared for the storm though and had crews out cleaning the streets to remove branches as quick as possible.  Power outages were still an issue for many local residents though.

Some say they couldn’t even notice it, others could feel a distinctive rumbling in the villages and knew something wasn’t right.  That rumbling was an earthquake that originated all the way in Virginia with its reverberations being felt all the way up the coast.

Developments around town have been a hot topic in the past year with the proposed Walgreens and Rivertowns Square projects in town taking the next steps.  The new businesses have been both cheered and jeered, which has made for exciting news in the village.

The Tappan Zee Bridge has long been something people have debated with some calling for a completely new bridge and some seeking mere upgrades.  The proposal will be one to watch closely in the new year.

The remembrance of the death of Pace University’s DJ Henry was something that caught the attention of everyone.  A controversial shooting led to his death that left many with remaining questions as he was honored by everyone from his classmates to even rap icon Jay-Z.

Power outages and downed power lines from the October snow storm made trick or treating a dangerous adventure in some areas. Dobbs Ferry shut off the downtown to create a safe environment for families to walk around and show off their costumes.

The Dobbs Ferry High School football team returned to Syracuse this year and took the state title home after a dominating performance in the championship game.  It’s the fourth state title for Dobbs Ferry football as well.

The Dobbs Ferry School District saw the beginning of a new era this year with superintendent Lisa Brady, high school principal John Falino and Springhurst principal Julia Drake all entering their first years in their new positions.

Construction has been commonplace around town this year with everything from Ashford Ave being repaved to Gould Field receiving a makeover.  Village officials took advantage of local grant money and combined it with village funds to give facelifts to the streets, fields and even the waterfront.
