The men knocked on the door of his home at 9 a.m. and said they were police, said Mantung Cheng, owner of New China Restaurant at Warburton Avenue and Main Street. Once inside, the men pulled out guns and tied up him, his wife and father, Cheng said. They stole cash and fled, he said.
"They said they were cops, so I let them in," Cheng said. "They tried to get my money. It was a little cash. From one, maybe two days."
The invasion was a surprise, especially since it happened so early, said Cheng, who has owned the New China restaurant with his wife for the past 20 years. Neighbors and business owners on Main Street made calls to police after seeing the commotion and hearing cries from the Cheng's apartment.
After four months of investigation, Hastings police announced in May that three men from the Bronx were arrested and charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary, both class B felonies.
Hastings detectives worked with the New York Police Department, investigators from the Westchester County District Attorney’s office, the Organized Crime Criminal Enterprise Bureau, the Westchester County Intelligence Center and the Westchester County Police Identification Unit during the investigation.
Hastings detectives worked with the district attorney’s office to track phone calls made from the apartment by the suspects during the robbery, which helped lead to the identification of the three men.
